The world is facing a multitude of challenges including rapid climate change, the rise of artificial intelligence, and increasing polarization. If we look back at the history of humanity, it’s always been artists who have brought us to an understanding of ourselves. The stereotype of artists (even among artist communities) would paint them as unreliable, while evidence from the pandemic shows that artists are more than worthy of our trust. Knowing the needs facing our turbulent world, how can artists thwart the stereotype and trust themselves

How do adult working artists design their practices and lives, and what do they wish they knew when they were embarking on that journey? In this interactive presentation an examination of the personal, professional, and financial choices of artists in contemporary American society will be followed by an exploration of what mid-career artists would tell their past undergraduate counterparts knowing what they know today.

Adding artist entrepreneurship to the undergraduate collegiate curriculum can be a challenge for any art faculty. Faculty buy-in, limited course space in degree programs, and lack of resources top (but don’t end) the list of barriers. Yet providing access to the tools and skills of artist entrepreneurship is key to enduring artist careers. Explore the tools and strategies art faculty use in their current classes to give undergraduate arts students the ability to create balanced and thriving lives that include enduring arts practices in this faculty workshop.

Research shows that collegiate fine and performing arts alumni identify significant gaps in the business skills they need during their careers and what they learned as a part of their degree program. This series of workshops fill the most commonly identified gaps. The series includes budgeting, grant-writing, financial record keeping, money basics, revenues & portfolio careers, and the practices of enduring artists.
